The taxonomy of mint is very complex, with many different mints found around the world. However, only a handful of mints are widely available for use in perfumery. Some are highly toxic and should never be used in perfumery.
The key chemical constituents of each mint can vary greatly, with some containing high concentrations of menthol, while others are richer in carvone or linalool. This has a significant impact on their odour profiles.
We have found that bergamot mint, also known as lemon mint, has the most versatile odour profile of the mint essential oils widely available due to high percentages of linalyl acetate and linalool. This oil has a gentle herbaceous citrus fruitiness akin to bergamot or lavender, whilst gently retaining a minty freshness. This is why Marina selected as one of the key notes in our Spring Rain fragrance.
In perfumery, as with all mints, “less is more” as they can overwhelm compositions, but don’t be afraid to add this beautiful fresh green herbaceous top note to you perfumes.
At home, it’s beautiful in a diffuser or oil burner to fragrance any room, especially in spring, or whenever you want to create a calm spa-like environment.
